Essential Oils for Soothing Skin Care
Essential oils have long been used for their healing properties as a gentle and natural solution for skin care. Aromatherapy, in fact, dates back to the ancient Egyptians who used essential oils for medicinal and spiritual purposes. Essential oils are versatile and can be used to treat skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and wrinkles. They can also be used in massage or facial therapies for relaxation purposes.
Essential oils are highly concentrated forms of volatile plant compounds that are extracted through steam distillation or cold pressing of flowers, leaves, stems, bark and roots of plants. Most essential oils have anti-inflammatory properties which help to soothe the skin and reduce inflammation caused by certain skin irritations. They also contain powerful antioxidants that help prevent free radical damage from environmental factors like sun exposure.
Some great essential oils that can be used in skin care routines include lavender oil, geranium oil, chamomile oil and tea tree oil. Lavender oil has calming properties that make it a go-to choice for soothing dry skin conditions like eczema. Geranium oil has healing benefits that help reduce redness and soothe inflamed skin caused by acne breakouts or dermatitis. Chamomile oil is known for its anti-inflammatory effects which helps reduce redness associated with rosacea and other skin conditions. Tea tree oil possesses antiseptic qualities which make it an ideal choice for treating infected pimples or blemishes on the face or other parts of the body.
When using essential oils on the skin it is important to keep in mind that they are highly potent concentrations so it is best to mix them with carrier oils like jojoba or almond oil before applying directly onto the skin. It is also important to avoid any harsh ingredients such as alcohols or fragrances when mixing these two together as this could cause further irritation to sensitive skin types. Additionally, if you plan on using essential oils regularly then it is recommended to perform a patch test first just in case you experience any allergic reactions upon contact with your skin type specifically.
